Roger Simon on immigration...

He is blunt enough to propose a program that is simple enough to work, and he's blunt enough to call it "amnesty." I think he's right. 200-something million Americans can't wink at illegal immigration for twenty years, enjoy cheap prices for fruit, landscapers, cleaning staff, and restaurant help, and then say: "We're shocked, shocked to find there are illegal immigrants here!"

If Mike Huckabee really wants to deport 10 million illegal aliens, he might as well withdraw all our troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, W. Europe, and Korea, and bring back the U.S. Navy too. We will need all of them and the reservists to prod more people than live in Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Bolivia, Austria, Israel, Libya, Nicaragua, Norway, or New Zealand to the border.

Having grown up in Alabama in the era of George Wallace and Bull Connor, I'll go ahead and tell you that you never live down such cruelty and brutality, even if you were a child when it happened. (Everybody in the world seems to know that "BFD" in the photo is "Birmingham Fire Department.")

And what are we going to do when America's 21st-century Latino MLK, whoever it might be, with Gandhian shrewdness for publicity and constitutional law organizes the deportees and their legal relatives for non-violent resistance?
