The guns fell silent at 11 a.m., 11 November 1918. Today we celebrate our veterans young and old, and we cannot help but remember the fallen. To the left are those of the British Empire who rest in Ypres, Flanders.

Our oldest veteran is Frank Buckles, born in 1901, of Charles Town, West Virginia, pictured last year and in 1917. He is the last living American veteran of the Great War. He was also a civilian contractor in the Philippines in 1942 who was captured by the Japanese and spent three years as a POW during the Big War.

Who would believe that a fellow who survived World War I and World War II would outlive all of his comrades?
Click here as Liam Clancy sings "The Green Fields of France." I like his interpretation best, though dozens of people have recorded the song, and dozens of videos are on YouTube.
